We test in an electromagnetic environment whether your devices and systems function sufficiently well and emit electromagnetic interference only to the extent that other systems are not significantly impaired in their function. 

It is worthwhile to consider and control the requirement from the very beginning. In this way, potential EMC problems can already be eliminated in the development phase.

The advantages are obvious:

• Optimisation of EMC behaviour during measurement (online debugging).
• EMC behaviour of different modules/components can be matched to each other
• Measurements can be carried out more flexibly
• New methods that are not yet standardised can already be used (e.g. time-domain measurement methods)
• Considerable facilitation of certification of the finished product
• Passing the certification test in the first attempt

Outsourcing measurements to an external EMC laboratory is especially interesting for smaller companies or companies without their own EMC know-how, as they can save the high acquisition costs for the measurement equipment. However, when taking this route, they must be aware that they are placing themselves in the complete dependence of an external service provider during all phases of product development.

Performing in-house measurements is an alternative, especially for larger companies. In addition to certification measurements in their own EMC laboratory, the independence from an external service provider can be mentioned as an advantage. However, in addition to considerable personnel and financial effort, a high level of expertise and experience is required.

Alternative test strategy

A middle way is in-house EMC measurements during the development phase, in preparation for the acceptance measurement in the external laboratory. It is true that this approach requires EMC knowledge. But if these are available, it is a good compromise between cost and personnel. In addition, the dependence on an external service provider is only reduced to the final phase of product development.
